Let’s talk about skin care from a direct sales company. My clients frequently get approached by direct sales reps trying to sell them their skin care systems. While I can appreciate their hustle, as your trusted skin care adviser, it’s my job to tell you the cold hard truth about buying skin care products from a direct sales company.

All Skin Care Products are Not Created Equal

As a professional Esthetician, I carefully select my product lines based on quality and performance. I review the active ingredients in a product and make sure my clients are getting a high quality skin care product in anything they purchase from me. I also carefully review the ingredients to make sure they are not harmful. Lastly, I look at the active ingredients to make sure they are going to do what they say they are going to do.

A direct sales rep is not going through this type of vetting process. They are simply selling what their company offers. That said, you should be cautious of using these products. You may be spending money on skin care products that don’t work and contain harsh chemicals.

Direct Sales Rep ≠ Esthetician

This post is not meant to bash direct sales reps. There are many direct sales companies that offer great products and many direct sales reps that are wonderful to work with. However, when it comes to skin care, I’m simply saying that in many cases, you aren’t getting the best bang for your buck when you buy from a direct sales company versus a professional.

In addition to the quality of the products like I mentioned above, most direct sales reps lack the professional knowledge and experience you find in a licensed Esthetician. Most direct sales reps don’t:
• Know how to assess your skin and make appropriate product recommendations
• Know how to help you determine the cause of your skin problems

When you buy skin care products from a direct sales company instead of an Esthetician you are missing out on the knowledge and experience a licensed Esti can offer you. Plus, the skin care company I purchase products from will only sell to licensed professionals to ensure their products are ending up on the right faces!

Don’t Be Sold By Before and After Photos

Many direct sales companies claim their products to deliver dramatic results when it comes to clearing up your acne, disappearing hyperpigmentation or erasing wrinkles. Based on my education and experience, I will tell you these types of results don’t happen over a specific number of days. You know the marketing pitch, “see visible results in just 30 days.” Skin problems don’t disappear overnight and often require treatments outside of what you can buy in a bottle so don’t be sold by amazing before and after photos.

Besides, amazing before and after photos typically allow these companies to command premium prices for their products. While most people think buying products from a professional Esthetician would be more expensive, the opposite is sometimes true. Depending on the company, product lines that I carry are either less expensive or comparable in price.

So, the next time you are approached by a direct sales rep to buy skin care products ask yourself:
• Is this person a licensed Esthetician that knows the science behind skin care?
• Has this person professionally assessed my skin to know what it needs?
• Do I know what is in these products? And are the ingredients potentially harmful to me?
• Is the price point of these products worth it?
